Associate Teachers' Programme (ATP)
ATP course participants
The ATP is designed for members of staff who teach, or support teaching as part of another role. Teaching activities may include supervision, lecturing, demonstrating, leading seminars or tutorials.
It is expected that participants will be employed by the university for the full duration of the programme (12 months, exceptionally 8) and ideally be teaching 30 hours or more over any academic year. Some members of staff may be employed on a fixed-term contract which is shorter than the duration of the programme, if this is your situation and you are interested in ATP we would encourage you to complete an application form which will help us to advise you on the most appropriate development to fit around your teaching work.
Qualifying participants include:
- School/ Departmental teaching staff on a variety of part time contracts
- Research staff where teaching is a part of their work
- Nursing Practitioner Health Lecturers (PHL’s).
The ATP programme runs once a year with sessions spaced at one or two per month, spread over a six-month period. The taught element of the programme consists of a minumum of six workshops. Two of the workshops can be selected from optional courses to suit your teaching activities. Most participants complete the taught element within six months, but some choose to take longer to finish.
Most workshops are available to any member of staff (full or part time) on a stand-alone basis. Individual sessions may be useful to revise areas of your teaching, to explore a new area or for the opportunity to network and join lively debate with fellow teachers.
Assessment
Assessment is through submission of a reflective teaching portfolio. The teaching portfolio needs to demonstrate reflective practice and continuing professional development in your subject area. The portfolio takes the form of a short project of 3000 words and includes examples of teaching activities. Examples of teaching activities must include sessions which have been observed by colleagues on the programme.
Accredited Prior Learning (APL)
Experiential learning cannot be taken into account for this programme. However, if you have attended relevant Central Short Courses workshops at any time within three years prior to registration for ATP, these can count towards completion of the programme.

Alternative routes to HEA Associate status
If you taught before you came to Nottingham and have no current plans to teach here but still would like to become an Associate of the HEA, you may like to consider making a direct application for recognition. For more information have a look at the Higher Education Academy's website: http://www.heacademy.ac.uk
You will need to complete an application form which maps your teaching experiences against the UK Professional Standards Framework and provide details of two referees who can comment on your professional practice. Gaining HEA Associate status will give you access to updates on innovations in teaching and resources on how teaching is supported within your discipline. It can also provide you with credits towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) at Nottingham (should you be appointed as a new academic and go on to do the PGCHE course).
